The purpose of most generator sets is to provide a reliable source of power to your facility or commercial operation during an emergency situation when power from the grid is suddenly lost or is not available in your environment. In the event of a power failure, you need peace of mind that your backup power source will kick into action on a moment's notice. But what happens when the power goes out and your back-up power does not function as expected? The result can often be costly and sometimes catastrophic.

This is why, regardless of the size of your emergency backup power system, your generator power system requires periodic maintenance to keep it in top condition and online and ready for an emergency.  In the middle of a power failure is NOT the time to find out your backup power system has problems. Having a well-planned Preventative Maintenance and Testing program in place ensures:

  • the best possible performance, reliability, and an extended engine life
  • protection of your investment in emergency power equipment
  • identification, diagnosis, and repair of minor issues before they become costly
  • elimination of damage by deferred maintenance
  • continued power for critical systems
  • and most importantly, minimized loss of service and revenue due to unplanned downtime thus protecting your company’s reputation

The average life expectancy of a typical standby generator set can last from 10,000 to 30,000 hours. On the other hand, a standby generator might operate as little as 26 hours a year (based on only 30 minutes of weekly exercise and no outages) or as much as several hundred hours a year, depending upon the number and duration of power outages.

In either case, a standby generator set could conceivably last 20 to 30 years. One of the most important ways to ensure a long, reliable operating life is to implement a Preventative Maintenance  and Load Bank Testing program.

Preventive Maintenance Service is typically done on a schedule based upon engine hours and/or time periods. The maintenance cycle should be adapted to meet specific application needs.   As a general rule, the more hours per year a unit operates, the more frequently it will require service. Environmental factors also play a role.  The more severe the environment (dusty, extremely hot or cold, highly humid, etc.), the more frequent the need for service may be.

Additionally, implementing a Load Bank Testing program as part of your Preventative Maintenance Service ensures that your systems can and will perform at the necessary power load levels at any critical point in time.  This additionally measure is added assurance and peace of mind that your system will cover your power needs when you need it most.

Sluder Emergency Power Services is fully capable of handling any repairs or replacement of your components, should this be necessary.  We will work with you to find the most cost-effective and timely way to complete the repairs or replacements so your system is ready at a moment's notice.

Today’s electrical grid delivers reliable electricity to millions of homes and businesses. However, electrical failures that affect large geographic areas do happen on a recurring basis due to hurricanes, floods, or major equipment failures. Local outages that affect smaller numbers of people happen much more often. In fact, in 2012, there were more than 2,800 unplanned power outages in the United States that lasted an average of 2.5 hr. Combined, these affected more than 25 million people, according to Eaton Corp.’s “Blackout Training Annual Report 2012.”
